A WOMAN was taken to hospital after being injured in a major late-night brawl in York city centre.

Police said up to 15 men and women were involved in a fight early yesterday, and one woman ended up laid out in the street after being punched.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said that a 25-year-old woman from Pocklington was taken to hospital. She was thought to have suffered an injury to her eye or the area around her eye, but it was not believed to be serious.

He said that problems appeared to have started in Clifford Street when doorstaff at the Gallery Nightclub called police just after midnight to report drink-related antisocial behaviour.

They warned police that trouble was brewing between two groups of young men in the street. A little later, between ten and 15 people were involved in a fight in the Nessgate area, during which a man punched a woman, who was then laid out in the street. He said a 20-year-old man from Doncaster had been arrested by police at the scene and taken into custody. The man was later released on police bail pending further inquiries.

A spokeswoman for Yorkshire Ambulance Service said that it was called out at 12.39am, and two ambulances were dispatched to Ouse Bridge, in High Ousegate.

She said that one patient, a woman, had been taken to York Hospital.

The Press reported in February about councillors’ concerns over alcohol-related admissions to accident and emergency at York Hospital.

Councillors said they were pressing for more information from health chiefs on how many patients turning up to A&E had been drinking prior to admission. They said there was currently no data on the number of admissions which were related to alcohol.

The York Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said that determining whether or not alcohol had contributed to a hospital admission could be subjective, as it required the clinician to make a judgement, but it would be looking at how it could improve monitoring.
