RELEGATED Dunnington III opened their bid for a return to division six with an opening day win in the Tyke Petroleum Men’s Tennis League.

Dunnington gave a solid team performance to beat a strong Bishopthorpe II side 64-44. Dave Carver and Rob Rhodes led the way for the home team with 24 games. The opening day honours, though, went to Pocklington II’s Barry Johnson and Keith Hopkins, who won 29 games in their team’s impressive 71-37 win at Riccall.

A strong York IV side, bolstered by new signing Rob Walker, from Wigginton, eased past resilient Wheldrake II 66-42. The first and final rounds had been 18-18 draws, but Wheldrake collapsed in the middle. Stamford Bridge II lead the way after a 72-36 demolition of plucky Selby.
