DRINKERS at a North Yorkshire pub have been asked to contact police, after a man died in the street shortly after leaving the premises.

Officers say the death is not being treated as suspicious, but they want to hear from witnesses who saw the man after he left The White Swan pub, in Bridge Street, Tadcaster.

He was found lying on the town’s main bridge over the River Wharfe at 4am on Sunday, having left the pub ten minutes earlier.

North Yorkshire Police have yet to release the man’s name, but said yesterday he was a 46-year-old, who had moved to Tadcaster from Leeds.

Police have viewed CCTV footage of the man after he left the pub and a post-mortem examination was carried out on Sunday afternoon. Although police do not regard the death as suspicious, they are continuing investigations on behalf of the coroner and urged witnesses to come forward.

The White Swan proclaims itself to be Tadcaster’s “number one entertainment venue” and is open until 4am on Saturday and Sunday mornings. There was no answer when The Press phoned the pub yesterday. Speaking to The Press on Sunday, former Tadcaster councillor Roderic Parker said: “We do have concerns locally about late-night drinking. The assumption is that this guy had been out drinking.”

The bridge was closed until early evening on Sunday, while investigations continued. Police have CCTV footage of a motorist driving past the man as he lay on the ground, and have urged that driver to contact them.

They also want to hear from people who were in The White Swan on Saturday night into early Sunday morning.

Anyone with any information should phone York CID on 0845 6060247.
