THE reigning Miss York played her part to ensure the city’s Roman Festival will stay free for all when it kicks off next month.

Helen Lawal, from Pickering, hosted a fundraising auction in aid of the festival, which raised more than £3,500 towards the annual event.

The York Roman Festival, on May 23 and 24, is a free city-wide celebration.

Nick Eggleton, a spokesperson for the festival, said: “Thanks to our numerous and generous supporters and Miss York, the money raised will ensure the event stays free for another year.”

More than 50 lots were auctioned but four lots are still available. These are a three page website, including hosting for 12 months from Triangle Multimedia; two hours’ promotional photography from York photographer Kippa Matthews, six family tickets to Nunnington Hall courtesy of The National Trust and the chance to take part in the festival as a Roman Soldier.
