One of the best things about foreign travel is thechance to experience the life of a society other than our own. Many of us, while abroad, have been lucky enough to come across a wedding, a party, a procession being held to mark the patron saint of a church or locality.

It’s easy to forget that, as a nation, we do this so well ourselves, until occasions like this weekend’s St George’s Day parade come around.

For a short while, the streets of York were given up to a display of colour and pageantry, a celebration of Englishness, in which both those taking part and those just looking on could take pride and enjoyment. It brightened York’s day. We hope our pictures brighten yours.
