A MAN died from serious head injuries today, after falling on a bridge soon after leaving a town-centre pub.

Detecives are appealing for witnesses and information, after the man was found on the bridge over the River Wharfe in Tadcaster. A post-mortem has been carried out, and police say they are not treating the death as suspicious.

The man was seen leaving The White Swan pub in Bridge Street at around 3:50am and was seen on CCTV heading towards the bridge, a police spokeswoman said.

She said he then went out of shot, but came back into shot and was seen falling “with some force” into the road.

A police spokesman said: “He was then discovered in the road by passers-by at around 4am who alerted emergency services. He was given first aid at the scene by members of the public, but he has since died from his injures.

Forensics officers examined the scene, and Bridge Street has remained closed for several hours.

Police appealed for information from anyone who was in the area of Bridge Street in Tadcaster between 3.45am and 4.15am this morning, or any motorists who were driving through the town and saw the man walking along Bridge Street.

The spokeswoman said they were especially keen to hear from the driver of a car believed to have driven past the man while he was lying on the ground.

Anyone with information should phone York CID on 0845 6060247.
