GIRLS’ football is booming at Poppleton Tigers.

The girls’ section at the Millfield Lane club is one of the largest in the North Riding County FA area, with more than 60 youngsters signed up.

The Tigers field teams in the City of York Girls’ League from Under-10s to U15s, including two U12s sides and an U13s.

The flagship side is the club’s U12s Orange team, who have already sealed a hat-trick of league titles. The team, coached by Jon Middleton, have won all 15 of their league matches this season, scoring 115 goals in the process. They also won the 2008 York RI tournament.

The U12s Black team, coached by Kevin Todd, have improved as the season has progressed, with most of the youngsters in their first competitive campaign. They are fifth in the table with four wins from 15 games.

The U13s have been runners-up in their league for the past two seasons, while also winning the York RI tournament for the past two years. They are third in their league, having picked up their form under coach Mike Walshaw after a tricky start to the campaign.

The U15s, coached by Darren Crompton and Andy Warburton, have enjoyed a superb season. They are fourth in the league and will today take on Heworth in the final of the League Cup at Pocklington.

The U10s are coming to the end of their debut season in the league and they occupy fourth place under manager Helen Godson.

The club, which is seeking planning permission for a new clubhouse at Millfield Lane, are aiming to field teams from U10s to U16s next season.
