Heworth ARLC Under-13s took on Smawthorne for the second time in ten days and came away with an 8-8 draw.

Top tackler Kenny Penrose and centre partner Tommy Hields kept Smawthorne at bay in the early stages, but the hosts eventually took the lead.

Heworth hit back with a breakaway try by man-of-the-match Richard Ashton, but Smawthorne forged 8-4 ahead.

With ten minutes remaining, Heworth drove the ball forward on the final tackle.

It was squeezed out to hooker Jack Rowson and he scored to level the match.

The coaches’ player of the match was Nathan Jamieson.

Meanwhile, the Villagers’ U9s produced a battling 32-28 victory over hosts Whinmoor Warriors.

Josh Rogerson helped himself to four tries, while the Heworth defence was in awesome form with tough tackling from Arron McBride, Shay North and Sam Young.

Heworth responded well after conceding the opening try and Rogerson scored from Shay North’s kick.

North and Young then combined as McBride ran strongly onto the ball and burst through the defence to score in the corner.

Leon Beattie’s jinking run was supported by the busy Sam Young, who took the offload and crashed over for a try.

Rogerson went over for his second before half-time and he also added a superb third after the interval.

Rogerson scored his fourth with a moment of magic as he collected a kick deep inside his own half and ran full length of the pitch.

Beattie, Young, North and McBride all converted their kicks in a tough win.
