YORK Minster was bathed in pink light last night in an appeal to women to sign up for this summer’s Race For Life.

Meanwhile, the fountain in Exhibition Square will remain pink for the next month in a show of support for Cancer Research UK.

Organisers of York’s Race For Life are hoping this year’s event on Sunday, June 28, will raise £360,000 for the charity’s lifesaving work.

But so far, they have only filled half the available places and hope to attract another 3,250 women to take part in the 5km event on Knavesmire.

Event organiser Jenny Key said: “The Minster is perhaps the best-known building in York, and to be given an opportunity to use such a beautiful and iconic landmark as a way of inviting more women to take part in Race For Life and help beat cancer is an amazing show of support from York Minster and City of York Council.

“I’m also really excited at the prospect of seeing the fountain in nearby Exhibition Square pink.”

So far, 3,256 people have signed up for either the morning race, which will take place at 10.30am, or the afternoon race, at 2.30pm.

In conjunction with Cancer Research UK, we are giving readers of The Press the chance to wear the coveted number one badge during the York Race For Life.

We are asking you to write in with your stories about why you are taking part in the race.

Have you, or someone you are running for, been diagnosed with cancer?

Have you taken up a special exercise regime because of the event? Are there several generations of your family taking part together?

When the deadline is reached on June 12, we and Cancer Research UK will select who will wear the top number.

To take part in the number one race badge competition, please write with your story to Nicola Fifield, The Press – York, 76-86 Walmgate, York, YO1 9YN, or email nicola.fifield@thepress.co.uk.

Make sure you specify whether you are taking part in the morning or afternoon race and include a contact phone number.

If you would like to enter the race, log on to raceforlife.org, or phone 0871 641 2282.
