YORK is proving to be a city of heroes, with nominations coming in thick and fast for The Press’s sixth annual Community Pride Awards.

But we still need your entries to recognise those who are a credit to the city but who rarely receive the praise they deserve.

The awards, held in conjunction with City of York Council, are a celebration of special individuals and groups whose sterling work marks them as true champions of the place where we live and work.

Pupils and teachers at York schools have a chance to show that they are top of the class, by getting involved in the awards scheme.

We have awards for Best Primary School Project, Best Secondary School Or Higher Education Project, and Teacher Of The Year, and want people to put forward their suggestions.

The first two awards are for school or higher education projects which have improved their surroundings or the environment in general.

The Teacher Of The Year title will go to someone who, through enthusiasm and commitment, truly inspires their pupils.

We also want to recognise young community champions.

Two of the awards are specifically for young people – our Child Of The Year award is open to anyone under 12 who has overcome an adversity or faced up with courage to life’s hardships and challenges.

The second category for young people is the Spirit Of Youth award.

This is for people aged 13 to 17, and will be awarded to the nominee who makes the best positive contribution to their peers, their school or college, their community or the city in general.

Perhaps you know of a true sporting hero – this category rewards someone who has made an outstanding contribution to amateur sport in the city.

The winner need not be a sportsman themselves. So long as they have contributed to local sport, they are eligible for the award.

We also have categories for Best Community Project, Public Sector Hero, Health Service Hero, Charity Fundraiser Of The Year, Volunteer Of The Year, Service With A Smile, and Parent Of The Year. Finally we have the York Community Pride Person Of The Year – awarded to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to promoting pride in our city. The winners of each category are unveiled at a glittering ceremony at York Racecourse in October.

To nominate an unsung hero from your community simply fill in the coupon. Send us a (non-returnable) picture of your nominee, plus any other information, to Community Pride Awards, Paula Homer, The Press, 76-86 Walmgate, York, YO1 9YN, or email us at editor@thepress.co.uk
