THE Lyndhurst School girls’ mini-hockey squad can hear the county calling.

The squad, pictured, were in tip-top form to earn the right to represent Yorkshire after the drama of penalty flicks decided the 1-1 draw between Lyndhurst and City of York Hockey Club in the final of the mini-hockey tournament in Wakefield sponsored by Yazoo.

Amy Robinson kept her nerve to score the decisive goal, ably assisted by goalkeeper Jessica Pidgeon, who made some fine saves and gained the Yorkshire champion title for her team. The U11 squad comprising Marni Esa, Georgie Fenny, Hannah Frisby-Pape, Megan Glew, Emma Huddlestone, Hattie Kettlewell, Jessica Pidgeon, Sofia Risso-Gill and Amy Robinson will now represent Yorkshire in the regional competition to be held in Manchester on April 26.

Open to both schools and clubs, the Yazoo mini-hockey competition is a national tournament resulting in stiff opposition.

Said Lyndhurst headmaster Ian Wright: “The girls have done really well to get this far.

“To qualify for the Wakefield district final and the chance to represent Yorkshire at regional level, the Lyndhurst squad led by Hattie Kettlewell first had to become one of eight group winners. This was achieved with wins against Harrogate Hockey Club, Westbourne School and a draw with Wakefield Girls’ High School.”
