FIFTEEN primary schools will play at Huntington Stadium tomorrow in the finals day of a massive tag rugby league tournament organised by the York City Knights Foundation.

A whopping 56 schools in the York district have taken part in heats, held at Huntington and Oakland school, building up to tomorrow’s event, which is a curtain raiser to the Championship One game between the Knights and Blackpool Panthers.

The annual event – sponsored Ryedale Garages of Kirbymoorside and Shepherds Building group – has now been running for six years and is one of the largest competitions of its type in North Yorkshire.

It is aimed at not only promoting the sport and advertising local amateur rugby league clubs but also ties in with the Knights’ healthy lifestyle campaign.

More than 1,000 children have had coaching from the Knights’ community team over the past few months specifically linked to these festival, which saw 600 of the youngsters going on to represent their schools.

The 14 automatic qualifiers were Lakeside and Dunnington (heat one), Sand Hutton, St Aelred’s, Huby and Sutton on the Forest (heat two), Appleton Roebuck, Copmanthorpe, Dringhouses, Wheldrake and Alne (heat three), Osbaldwick, Crayke, New Earswick and Hamplands (heat four), and Tang Hall, who were offered a wildcard place after winning the fair play award. Appleton Roebuck have had to pull out.

The winners tomorrow will go on to represent the York district in the Leeds Trinity North Yorkshire Youth games which will be held later this year.

Also, all the schools that participated in the tag rugby will be invited to play in a contact rugby festival as an extension of the programme.

Meanwhile, the Knights are running an Easter Holiday Camp at Heworth ARLC on April 14, 15 and 16, from 9-3pm. The cost of the camp is £12 per day or £30 for all three days and is open to children aged six to 14.

Children who attend all three days will also receive a Knights junior season ticket for 2009. These will cover the seven remaining home games and can also be used to gain free entry for away games in Championship One.

The camp will give children the opportunity to improve their rugby skills and see what it is like to train like a Knights first team star.
