MIKLAGARD, AD 965. Stranded in a hostile Mediterranean city, battle weary and down on their luck, the surviving members of Viking band The Oathsworn are waiting for their leader Orm to restore their fortunes and lead them to wealth and plunder.
But after a violent encounter in a backstreet of the Byzantine capital, Orm is lucky to escape with his life. His prized sword, the legendary Rune Serpent, is stolen – and with it the runes that reveal the location of a lost treasure.
Orm requisitions a boat, and the Oathsworn head off south through the Aegean and Mediterranean seas in pursuit of the rapacious Starkad and the sword he has stolen.
Their voyage leads them to rape and plunder on a Greek island, and then, having ditched their boat, on a dangerous trek across the deserts of Jordan to the ancient city of Jerusalem.
Earthy, violent, and steeped in the sights and pungent smells of the medieval middle east, this is an enthralling Viking saga – a tale of a band of savage strangers in a strange land far from their Norse home.
