IAN Gillan, frontman with 1970s rock band Deep Purple, is usually associated with a heavy rock sound, but One Eye To Morocco – Gillan’s first studio album of new recordings in 12 years – blows this myth out of the water.
Gillan has written the songs with long-term collaborators Steve Morris, Michael Lee Jackson and Rodney Appleby. The 12 tracks range in mood, colour and depth from classic rock and roll, to mid-tempo soul, bluesy riffs, and even Arabic sounds, such as the album opener and title track, with its hypnotic, seductive orchestration.
Better Days, meanwhile, is a truly soulful ballad and No Lotion For That is pure rock at its finest. All show off Gillan’s distinctive voice – Deep Purple fans and Gillan admirers alike should love this album.
