A DOG rescue centre is fighting for survival following a fall in donations.

Since November last year, Plantation Dog Rescue, at High Catton, near Stamford Bridge, has been struggling because of the economy and it is looking for donations to help secure their future.

In the centre’s latest newsletter, manager Ruth Haycox said: “We lost a few of our larger monthly donations and re-homing slowed almost to a halt around Christmas.

“We have been working extra hard to bring in more funding. The public are suffering due to the recession which then has a knock on effect on the dogs, and the rescue centres.

“Many of the smaller rescue centres have gone under in the last few months and we are pulling out all the stops to prevent us from being another one on the list.

“At the end of last year we did have a huge stroke of luck in that a solicitors very kindly chose to offer us a grant. We have a new block of ten kennels on order which should be with us and in use very soon.”

The Press reported last year on an ongoing appeal at the centre to help it continue its work and letting readers know that for as little as £5 a month they could save a dog’s life and help the centre care for it.

There was a good response to the appeal and, as a result, ten new standing orders were set up.

The centre staff assess, vaccinate, microchip, neuter, flea and worm each dog.

They also do some basic training with the dogs to make it easier for them to find a suitable home.

The centre is also offering people the chance to sponsor a dog. For £50 you can pick one of the dogs and visit it. Anyone doing this will be sent a certificate and photos until the dog is re-homed.
