How safe is your house? Fair to middling, according to the latest reaearch.

A home insurance company has rated major towns and cities in England and Wales for risks including criminal damage, burglary and flooding – and York has emerged 23rd safest out of a total of 43 places.

Levels of protection from Neighbourhood Watch schemes, as well as numbers of police officers, were also considered by research from Virgin Money when drawing up the survey.

It found that householders in the London borough of Kensington & Chelsea are the safest, with homeowners in the Royal Borough edging out Dudley, in the West Midlands, and Poole, in Dorset, for having the safest houses in England and Wales.

Householders in Doncaster, however, have the riskiest houses, ahead of near-neighbours in Sheffield and Nottingham.
