YORK ‘A’ made it to the Yorkshire over-55s Challenge Cup semi-finals to be played at Scarborough IBC after they were awarded 12 points when Redcar failed to turn up at Thanet Road.

Bowls were played at the away leg, however, and proved to be successful for both rinks.

Geoff Walker’s team won the first three ends to lead 3-0 but then dropped a two followed by a six.

After 14 ends they were still behind at 12-11 but finished in style, winning all of the remaining ends to take the game 28-12.

Fred Clayden’s side scored a two on their first end but four ends later they were 8-2 behind. At the half way stage they were still 12-5 down before clawing back the deficit.

A three on the eighteenth end gave them a 15-13 lead which they didn’t let slip and they went on to win 19-14.

The 18 points they collected from the game weren’t enough to take the title as North Cave A won their last game 17-1 against Hull to win the league by four points.

New Earswick, who effectively stopped their city rivals from winning the league when they thrashed them in their last game, ended the season with a disappointing 75-68 defeat to Doncaster, only picking up four points.

At home, Barry Johnson’s rink led 18-11 with three to play and they held on for a 20-16 victory.

Barry Harrison’s team let their game slip away after being 9-6 in front after eleven ends – they lost 22-12.

In Doncaster, Dave Sykes team trailed 18-15 with two to play, but a single gave them hope then a six gave them a fantastic 22-18 win.

Ralph Tiplady’s side were level at 14-14 with two to play but went down 19-14.

In the second division, York B won their battle to avoid bottom place beating North Cave B 93-67.

The first leg played away saw Alwyn Johnson’s team come from four shots behind to win 22-19. Dennis Haw’s team lost 23-17.

At home, Ron Kirkpatrick’s four rallied from 6-0 down after four ends to easily win 29-15.

Alwyn Redhead’s team led 7-0 after three but after eleven this was reduced to one shot at 11-10, though a good second half to the game saw them win all but one end and take the game 25-9.
