YORK edged past Featherstone in a close finish to the Yorkshire knockout fours final at Thanet Road.

Mick Parker’s York team took a 10-0 lead after only six ends against a strong Featherstone team skipped by John Whiteley but a single then a four gave the West Yorkshire side a glimmer of light.

A four followed by a six on the eleventh and twelfth ends made the score 21-6 and the question was when would Featherstone concede?

With three ends to play York were still well on top at 23-13 but they then dropped a six and then a three on the very next end.

With only a shot to find going into the last, Featherstone were on a roll and – with one wood to go – Whiteley’s four held one shot.

His last wood looked to have pinched the game but it fell out by just an inch and the game went to an extra end.

This seemed to wake up York and they pulled together, picking up a vital shot, to win the game 24-23.

It was sweet consolation for David Attwood who had earlier lost his under-25s Singles final to Hornsea’s Scott Burrell 2-1 on sets.

Featherstone gained some solace when three of their defeated fours team easily beat Huddersfield in the Triples Final 23-5.

But in the Pairs Final Selby were left kicking themselves as they let a dream start slip. Leading 11-0 after seven ends, they only won two more and lost the game to Doncaster 25-14.
