Each April, I find myself absolutely dreading the festival of St George and everything it stands for.
I am strongly opposed to all this compulsory Englishness, since I honestly believe that the St George legend is one of the weeds of history.
St George symbolises patriotism and pride in one’s nationality? Rubbish! St George is a Middle Eastern foreigner who never even visited our fair country, let alone fought for us. His very name excludes the notion of patriotism. Personally I think that the St George legend was sown by the ugly lies of some medieval king to cover up the real facts.
It is time we stopped celebrating this shady man, and adopted a more worthy personage as our national saint.
