York Under-11 Schoolboys continued their good run of form with a convincing 5-1 victory over Nottingham.

With the York College pitch unplayable, a wonderful surface was provided by Poppleton Junior FC and York made full use of the conditions.

Missing captain Ben Hirst and the influential Matt Fisher, the home team shuffled their pack but remained brim full of resolve. The hard-working Matt Parker was given a rare start in attack for York and duly obliged when opening the scoring after ten minutes, his shot curling in off the far post.

Set-piece king Josh Nelson extended the lead when his well-taken free-kick evaded all and sneaked in past the Nottingham goalkeeper.

York had firm control of the game with the midfield unit of Joe Wales, Jake Wright, Ben Godfrey and Joe McCormick controlling possession.

It was Wales who extended the advantage before Nottingham quickly reduced the arrears when a visiting raider out-muscled the York rearguard to fire past ’keeper Charlie Murphy.

Any chance of a recovery, however, was quickly dispelled when Joe McCormick gained reward for his hard work with a shot that went in via a deflection.

York’s best was saved for last as left-back Kwame Norku picked up the ball deep in his own half, advanced towards the edge of the Notts penalty area, played a one two with McCormick and drilled home from close-range.

Wright and McCormick shared the man of the match honours with excellent performances also from Matty Mulhearn, Godfrey and Norku.

Said assistant coach Brendan Qualter: “Once again the boys delivered a quality performance giving the opposition little opportunity to stake their claim in the game. Our midfield was excellent, breaking up play and using the ball wisely.”

Next up for the U11s is a trip to undefeated Liverpool today.
