CITY of York Athletics Club won two gold medals in field events at the Northern Indoor Athletics championships at Sheffield.

Rebecca Tunnicliffe, aged 14, won the shot putt title with a new personal best of 11.84 metres in the Under-15 age group.

She won by more than two metres and beat 16 other athletes and the triumph now ranks Tunnifcliffe as number one in the UK in the U15 age group.

Primarily a javelin thrower, she has been practising the shot during the winter.

The club’s success continued when 15-year-old Scott Lincoln won the U17 age group shot putt title, also by more than two metres and, like his club-mate, posted a personal best of 14.33m.

Lincoln now moves up to fourth in the UK in the U17 age group.

Both gold medallists will next compete at the UK Championships on February 15 and coach coach Paul Wilson believes they both have a great chance of winning a medal.
