THE Bridgefield at Bishopthorpe took centre stage once again in the Acomb Tackle York and District Winter Angling League.

With the River Ouse around York still carrying at least four feet of extra floodwater, many of the 90-strong field struggled and there were many dry nets.

Adrian Jackson took advantage of his draw on peg 89 and single-handedly led his Anglers Corner side to second place on the day.

Offering maggot and caster on the feeder, Jackson bagged a brace of bream for a 6lb 5oz finish that was not added to by his team-mates.

At the next peg upstream, Keith Mitchell also found a bream willing to brave the raging river and took a single fish of 3lb 3oz on worm that was enough to secure runners-up position.

Tom Gausden continued his good Yorkshire Winter League form and took third from the Fulford section with a mixed net of roach and perch, taken on pole and maggot, of 2lb 13oz.

York Tackle took team honours with a consistent performance. Despite not having anyone on the top six, they weighed in 7lb 3oz.

With two rounds left, Barlby Village have a slender lead on 50 points, two ahead of Anglers World and four in front of York Tackle.

Meanwhile, with more than 30lb needed to get a section win, both lakes at Langwith were in fine shape.

Winner Ray Marklew more than doubled that to record his win at peg two on Kevin’s Lake.

After weeks of maggot munching, the carp found pellet to their liking and Marklew’s 13-metres to the island approach resulted in a solid 65lb 14oz net of fish to three pounds.

Top man on Bethany’s Lake was Callum Evans at peg 16, where pellet again scored with carp to 3lb off the 12-metre line.

That brought him 46lb 8oz and second place, which left Andy Skelton to complete the top three with 44lb 10oz from peg seven on Bethany’s.

Result: 1 Ray Marklew, Garbolino Ossett, 65-14-0; 2 Callum Evans, Eccleshill, 46-8-0; 3 Andy Skelton, Langwith, 44-10-0; 4 Tim Russell, Garbolino Ossett, 36-3-0; 5 John Kenning, Garbolino Ossett, 34-4-0; 6 Steph Armitage, Team Glum, 33-10-0.

* Andy Geldart took the honours in the Mosella Selby Canal team event for Garbolino Ossett with a superb 15lb 4oz net. He caught roach and small skimmers to 4oz.
