THE tragic loss of life in conflicts past and present will be remembered in York today as part of Holocaust Memorial Day.
The Lord Mayor of York, Coun Brian Watson, will address visitors to the Guildhall, where City of York Council is hosting a ceremony which will see Holocaust survivor Eugene Black speaking of his experiences.
The event will also include readings from York students who have visited Auschwitz and other former Nazi camps, and a speech about hate and hate crime in York from Rob Turnbull, North Yorkshire’s chief crown prosecutor Each one of the participants will light a candle and recite one of the seven commitments which make up the United Nations Statement Of Commitment.
Other events taking place around the city include a lunchtime exhibition tomorrow at the Guildhall, with displays from the Holocaust Survivors’ Friendship Association, art work by York St John students and a screening of the film Double Portraits, which shows Holocaust survivors in conversation with contemporary refugees.
