TURNING to the back of the Highway Code, I found a page tabulating the maximum punishments for the more general traffic offences.
To my amazement, when I looked at the bottom of the table I saw that the maximum fine for cycling on the pavement is £500 and for dangerous cycling £1,000.
As a full-time pedestrian and a part-time motorist who spends his walking time dodging cyclists on the pavement and his driving time trying to anticipate what risks cyclists around me are about to undertake and how I can avoid running them down, I think it is about time these maximum penalties were imposed.
