I have been a York City supporter since before the days of Forgan, Philips, Howe, Brown, Stewart, Spence, Hughes, Bottom, Wilkinson, Storey and Fenton – about 1952/4.

What I liked about that team was that they not only played an attractive passing game, and yes, they played with a certain amount of aggression, but also there was quite a lot of passion.

It wasn’t often that they had a poor game either and sometimes someone was even booked (Bottom?).

Today’s team does not seem to have any of these attributes. Why not?

Somehow, wearing the City shirt doesn’t seem to give them that inspiration. I wonder why?

I can remember one game from that old era, I think it was against either Southport or Rochdale. A move started at the back when Tommy Forgan rolled a ball out to Ernie Phillips.

The ball went on to Ronnie Spence who ran forward in front of the main stand when the whole crowd started to cheer and, as he passed it to little Sid Storey, the roar of the crowd just grew and grew.

When he passed it out for Billy Fenton to centre it over for Norman Wilkinson’s head to score, the noise was unbelievable. That was passion for you both on and off the field.

Can’t they find that sort of passion now, because we are desperately near the relegation zone?
