ANYONE who uses the footbridge next to Scarborough Bridge will know this is not an ideal way for pedestrians or cyclists to cross the River Ouse.
It is a tight fit and cycles have to be hauled up and down the steps.
So ambitions plans for a new pedestrian and cycle bridge over the river, connecting York Railway Station with the area around Museum Gardens, are certainly welcome.
How inspiring a bridge can be – and how useful too, as the Millennium Bridge further down the river has shown.
It won’t do to get too excited, however, as these are merely proposals for now, and any bridge could be years away. But let’s have some span-do spirit, please.
