REVENGE cast a winning shadow for City of York Hockey Club men’s first team in Northern League division one.

After suffering a dubious reverse at Doncaster earlier in the season, they avenged that blow with a rousing 5-1 home conquest in the return duel.

Swift counter-attacking movements yielded a goal in the first five minutes from York’s Richard Jenkin, whose run from the halfway line ended with an unstoppable shot.

Soon after, Lee Cuffe drew the ’keeper off his line and lobbed the ball over him into an empty net.

Doncaster began to take the initiative but one of their attacks was turned over and Alex Cockram moved the ball at speed down the right, supported by Cuffe, who clipped home the two-on-one advance on the Doncaster goal.

Just before half-time, three short corners failed until Luke Ramli picked up the ball on the edge of the circle, moved around the right hand edge and scored with a powerful shot.

After the interval the game took a different turn as Doncaster got on the front foot.

In the middle of this period the visitors pulled a goal back after Jonathan Doyle in City’s goal had committed himself.

Tempers became frayed and, after one strong tackle, City found themselves temporarily down to ten men. But this inspired the hosts to keep better possession and take control once more. A break down the right by Steve Patterson finished with an excellent cross put away by Jenkin and from then on Doncaster were a spent force as City sealed a win to reinforce a late promotion surge.

Also in the goals were City of York II who thrashed Doncaster III 6-0 to go joint top of Yorkshire League division one.

An early goal from Matt Redwood put York in the driving seat.

Rich Cockram provided a second shortly afterwards, while runs from defence by Graham Cook and Dave Clamp kept Doncaster under the cosh.

Man of the match Tom Feasby tormented the Doncaster defence with his skill and pace and a three-pass move from defence saw Cockram slot home his second.

Alex Fletcher dived in at the far post to slot home Cockram’s angled cross and Redwood added two excellent late goals for his hat-trick.

In a tight exchange, City of York III lost by the only goal of the game at home to Sheffield University Bankers V.

In contrast, City of York IV prevailed 7-5 in a goal riot at Sheffield University Bankers VI.

Bankers opened the scoring early on but City skipper Tim Lister equalised.

A short corner strike put Bankers back in front but it wasn’t long before Lister fired into an open goal and Paul Mayne powered in a hat-trick to put York 5-2 up at the break.

Bankers closed the margin but Mayne, with a glorious run and finish, netted his fourth and was joined on the scoresheet by Dave Butchart.

Two further goals by Bankers completed the goalfest but that was not enough to deny City of York a memorable victory. The City of York V game at home to Sheffield UB VII was postponed due to a frozen pitch, while City of York VI suffered a 3-0 defeat at West Yorkshire Police.

York started brightly but failed to create any clear-cut chances.

After half-time, York continued to press, but conceded a goal from a short corner enabling the hosts to then seize command.

City of York VII entertained Leeds University V and were just shaded 3-2 in a thriller.

Despite having seven under-16s in the team, City were not overawed and even took an early lead, although having only ten players on the field, through a short corner from Mark Dransfield.

By half-time the students had scored twice and added a third in the second half before a strike from Josh Longster made for an exciting finish. On a barely playable pitch at Leeds University VI, City of York VIII displayed good organisation in defence before conceding three goals either side of half-time as the hosts eventually won 4-1.

Alex Herriott was the York marksman and goalkeeper Nathan Sorby excelled.

City of York IX were without a game, while City of York Badgers lost 3-2 at Rotherham Badgers despite twice leading through goals from Lewis Mortimer and Mike Couttie.
