VANDALS have once again caused misery to law-abiding citizens in York and ignited the call for more CCTV cameras to be installed in the city. This time yobs have targeted an award-winning community project and businesses, forcing them to spend thousands of pounds on needless repairs.

The victims included Space 109, in Walmgate, which provides activities for local people and won the Best Community Project gong at last year’s Press Community Pride Awards.

Joanne Pullar, its founder, said they would now have to devote money which could have been spent on other vital areas towards the repairs.

“Maybe it’s a joke to them, but this is a project the community respects and it certainly isn’t a joke to us,” she said.

Her comments are echoed by John Maughan, who owns neighbouring business Printer People. The latest attack cost his company £1,500 to replace a window.

Both he and Joanne have been calling for CCTV to be installed in the area for some time, both as a deterrent and a means of catching the culprits.

They hope the latest vandalism will have strengthened their case. Let’s hope so.
