GEORGE Moore has just taught me a very valuable punting lesson - never back a heavy odds-on favourite.
The Middleham hander notched a valuable Grade 2 contest at Doncaster today when Pagan Starprincess (28-1) scooped the Bet & Watch All Horse Racing at skybet.com Mares' Hurdle.
Congratulations to Moore whose five-year-old, ridden by Barry Keniry, was game in winning the near £22,000 first prize with a late charge.
But there wasn't much noise from the grandstands to cheer home the Yorkshire winner, with the rest of the crowd (including me) on the 2-5 shot Chomba Womba.
Not even AP McCoy in the saddle could stop Pagan Starprincess from reeling in Chombawomba and Moore was delighted, if a little surprised, at his mare's superb efforts.
"I thought she had a good chance of being second," he said.
