YEEHAA – it was a yazoo of a victory for City of York Hockey Club Under-13 girls.

They won the North Yorkshire Yazoo mini-hockey championships after an extra-time conquest of Ripon Grammar School in the final at Lady Lumley’s School.

Throughout a topsy-turvy tournament, York excelled particularly well in defence with most of the team doing a stint at one time or another in the rearguard.

All of the girls showed a lot of grit and determination and a feature of the day’s success was excellent passing and interplay in the middle of the pitch.

Combined with rapid ball speed they proved too much for their opponents and in Hannah Yoward had the day’s most deadly scorer.

York opened the ‘A’ League fixtures with a 6-0 hammering of Easingwold in which Yoward led the way with a hat-trick followed by goals from Gresswold, Carman and Birch.

Next up was a single-goal win over Harrogate crafted by a Yoward strike.

After drawing 1-1 with Ripon, the York girls toppled Harrogate again 2-0 with Willerton and Birch on target before seeing off Ripon Grammar 2-0, Yoward bagging another brace.

That put them into the semi-finals where Whtiby were beaten 3-1, Yoward scoring but eclipsed by a brace from Carman.

The final pitched York against Ripon Grammar for a second time and it was a much closer encounter with the teams locked at 1-1 at full-time.

But York’s all-round strength took its toll on Ripon in the extra time where York confirmed a 5-1 success, with a hat-trick from Birch supplemented by goals from Carman and Yoward, her eighth goal of the tournament.
