SIMON DYSON needed a fight-back in the final five holes of the first round to bolster his hopes of making the cut in the Commercialbank Qatar Masters.

The North Yorkshire golf ace was limping along at three under par after 13 holes before striking back with much-needed birdies at the 14th, 16th and 17th holes. The first two came at par-four holes and the third at a par three.

An earlier birdie, at the par-four fourth hole had negated a dropped shot at the par-three third, but he got himself into trouble with a double-bogey at the par-four sixth hole and, after six pars, followed that with another dropped shot at the par-three 13th.

Scotland’s Andrew Coltart, Sweden’s Henrik Stenson and Spain’s Miguel Angel Jiminez were the first-round leaders, each carding a six-under-par 66.

Meanwhile, Jose Maria Olazabal has emerged as the likely candidate to be the next European Ryder Cup captain, despite previously expressing reservations.
