CANON Lee School came out on top as a trio of teams battled it out in the York and Selby School Sports Association five-a-side football finals.

The Canon Lee side got the better of Archbishop Holgate’s School and Tadcaster Grammar School in the three-way final at the PlayFooball centre at Clifton Moor. The three schools qualified through previous rounds staged across the city.

And the quality of play was evident from the off as Tadcaster hit the back of the net within seconds of the first whistle in their opening game against Archbishop.

Not to be outdone, Archbishop hit back with goals of their own and their ’keeper also saved a penalty to keep them in the hunt. However, Tadcaster Grammar triumphed 6-4.

In the second game, defensive play came to the fore as Canon Lee put a stop to Tadcaster’s prolific scoring. Canon Lee took advantage of a penalty opportunity to snatch a 2-1 victory at the final whistle.

Game three was effectively a decider.

If Canon Lee won, they would qualify for the next regional round.

If Archbishop won, the outcome would have to be settled by a calculator.

There was no shortage of goals but Archbishop were out-gunned as Canon Lee came through 5-3.

The victors’ tally could have been more had it not been for a fantastic display by the Archbishop Holgate’s ’keeper, who made six high quality saves to keep his team in the game.

The final table was topped by undefeated Canon Lee, followed by Tadcaster and then Archbishop Holgate’s.

All three teams hit seven goals in their two games and it was Canon Lee’s superior defensive record which won them the title.
