Of all 12-year-old Luke Robinson’s Christmas presents, entry into the Pool Bridge Farm fishing match was perhaps one he did not expect.

The keen young fisherman was entered into the event by his father, Keith, and thrown in to competition with around 60 of the county’s leading anglers.

However, the youngster surpassed them all, netting a remarkable 14lb 2oz.

“We thought it would be a good experience for him as he is fishing mad,” said Keith.

“On arriving at 8am for the draw we nearly turned back as there were people everywhere and they obviously knew what they were doing judging by the amount of equipment they had.”

Luke was drawn on the Horseshoe Lake of the Wheldrake complex, with his father selected on Norman’s Lake.

“For the next five hours I didn’t see him but as the match finished and I walked round to meet him all talk was of some young lad bagging up. When I eventually got to him his smile said everything.”

Luke, who attends Canon Lee School in Rawcliffe, took up the pursuit just eight months ago and much of his equipment is second hand.

Amazingly, the rod he used to such good effect at Pool Bridge Farm was fashioned from two separate broken poles that were passed down to him.

Luke began his education at the Mitre Angling junior section, where he was taught by National Federation of Anglers coach Adele Wallis.

From there he has moved on to become a member of the Leeds Junior Angling Club and is currently competing for them in their winter series.

Although this was Robinson’s maiden victory, signs of his talent were evident earlier when he finished runner-up in a junior match at Carp Vale, Moor Monkton, with the youngster again bringing in an impressive haul of 58lb.

Luke’s sporting prowess though is not restricted to the fishing lake.

He was a member of the Clifton-with-Rawcliffe Primary School football team which scooped the coveted English Schools under-11s FA Cup and was nominated for The Press’ young sportsman of the year for his exploits in football, cricket, rugby and golf.
