A CHRISTMAS decoration played a crucial role in the outcome of the York and District Table Tennis League’s Shepherds Cup clash between Holgate ‘A’ and Coneysthorpe ‘B’.

The match was level going into the final game between John Farmery, of Holgate ‘A’, and Coneysthorpe’s Mike Fenby.

At match point, Fenby hit a high defensive shot which was set to land on the table until it struck a Christmas garland decoration suspended from the ceiling.

The incident ensured Fenby lost the point and drew the game, leaving the match scores tied at 4½ each.

A countback then revealed only a one-point difference between the sides, with Holgate ‘A’ winning by 349-348.

Other sides through to the second round are Shepherds ‘C’, Coneysthorpe ‘A’, Bootham ‘C’, NEDL/Bootham, Holgate ‘E’, Holgate ‘G’, Shepherds ‘B’, Shepherds ‘D’, Sessions ‘B’, Holgate ‘B’, Sessions ‘A’ and Shepherds ‘A’.

Two ties were played in the second round, with York RI ‘A’ beating Sessions ‘C’ 5½-3½ and Shepherds ‘C’ ousting Bootham ‘B’ 5-3.

The remaining second round ties will take place during the week starting February 16, as will the first round of the Machell Trophy.

Players are reminded that the closing date for entries for the York Closed Championships on January 24 and 25 is January 12 and entry forms are in handbooks.
