FIRST she got an MBE in the New Year Honours list – now a retired teacher has been given an “Oscar”.

Tina Wright – who spent 23 years as head of the performing arts faculty at Burnholme Community College – arrived in limo-driven style at a party to celebrate her gong held at the site where she has taught thousands of children the delights of drama.

Tina, 61, of South Bank, York, who retired at the end of 2008, then made her entrance along a red carpet before being presented with another fitting honour from former colleagues and pupils – an “Oscar” on behalf of the college for her decades of dedication.

“I was so shocked to receive an MBE – it was only when I looked at the official notification that I realised it wasn’t a joke,” said Tina.

“Working with children has always been the most enjoyable part and I was fortunate to be able to spend so many years at such a wonderful school – they are a fantastic group of people. A gesture like this party has left me so flattered.

“I have always loved teaching and taught many of the parents of children currently at the college. It has always been so exciting to take youngsters to the theatre, get them involved in productions and bring extra quality to their lives.”

Tina also set up the college’s student council as well as running her own drama studio and, during her time at Burnholme, developed close links with Opera North and The Royal Ballet.

Tina does not plan to be inactive in her retirement as she remains a York Theatre Royal board member and will continue playing a part in drama education through her work with City of York Council’s network learning groups.

Graham Reagan, the college’s acting assistant headteacher, said: “Over years of dedication and sheer hard work, Tina has inspired a great number of students to take to the boards and the list of her achievements is exhaustive.”
