WHEN a giant, London Eye-style wheel was first proposed for York, there were understandable concerns. Wouldn’t it ruin the historic skyline, and overshadow the Minster itself? Then it arrived, and became a massive hit. Since the wheel came down, the search has been on for a new site.

Operators World Tourist Attractions (WTA) want to put it in North Street gardens, next to the Park Inn Hotel.

Just as they did the first time around, conservationists voiced concern. But now a council consultation has revealed public support for the idea.

Provided there are no legal objections, and provided a wheel won’t do permanent damage there, we think the council should listen to what the people have said.

The wheel at the National Railway Museum was a huge success. This one could be too.
