The Press recently invited readers to comment on the now abandoned plans to build some much-needed, low-cost housing in Mill Lane, at Tadcaster (Town fears “stagnation, The Press, December 6).

There were also ambitious plans to build some specially adapted flats which would be suitable for the elderly and infirm to be able to lead independent lives.

This block of dwellings was also to be built in Mill Lane, in Tadcaster’s east parish.

In addition, there were plans to build some low-cost housing on derelict land in Hodgson’s Terrace in the centre of Tadcaster, in the west parish.

I am aware that ten years of preliminaries on projects at Tadcaster was once considered to be moderately quick work. The plans I have referred to are a mere eight years old.

Therefore, it should be no surprise there has been a diplomatic silence with regard to Samuel Smith’s housing plans for our town and which are now seen as “castles in the air”.

How much time and effort was wasted on these plans and what was the cost to the council taxpayers?

We will never know.
