This acoustic gem was recorded over two nights in Ann Arbor, Michigan in November 1968, six months after Young’s abrupt departure from Buffalo Springfield and just two months before the release of his eponymous debut album.

In essence, it is the public launch of his solo career. Key Buffalo Springfield standards are featured, including the introspective Mr Soul and the ambitious Broken Arrow, both telling reminders of the brilliance of Young’s early song-writing. Thrillingly, he unveils new material such as Birds, later to emerge on After The Goldrush, together The Loner, The Old Laughing Lady and the Dylanesque Last Trip To Tulsa, three timeless classics from that magnificent debut album.

Young himself is talkative throughout, providing an instructive insight into his positive and fertile frame of mind in the aftermath of the Buffalo Springfield burnout. This tantalising glimpse of an artist on the verge of greatness at 23 is highly recommended.
