FIREFIGHTERS have been battling throughout the night to bring a huge blaze at an East Riding factory under control.

Crews were called to Tekno Ltd in Killingraves Lane, Bishop Burton, just after 2am today after the alarm was raised and discovered a single-floor building in flames.

At the height of the blaze, almost 60 firefighters were on the scene using ground and aerial water jets to douse the inferno, which engulfed the 3,900sqm building.

As they tackled the fire, part of the building collapsed which led to the fire crews stepping back from the scene. In total, 13 fire engines were called in to deal with the incident and three of these were still carrying out damping-down work this morning to allow fire investigation teams to begin their probe into why it started, Humberside Fire & Rescue Service spokesman Glenn Ramsden said: “This has been a significant fire.

“The structural collapse has made the firefighting operation extremely hazardous and it is for this reason that we will not allow our teams into the building until the fire has been fully extinguished.”

Drivers were today being urged to avoid the area because smoke from the blaze, added to fog, had cut visibility. The A1079 between Killingraves roundabout and Bishop Burton was also closed, and further closures were also put in place between Newbald Road and Coppleflat Lane in Walkington.
