IT’S going to be a big week for rugby union at St Peter’s School, in York.

On Wednesday, the school will send out under-15s and U18s teams in the last 32 of the prestigious Daily Mail Cup.

The U18s will host Calday Grange Grammar School (kick off 2.15pm) in round five, after edging out Prince Henry’s School, of Otley, 13-6 in the previous round.

St Peter’s started strongly, with the forwards dominating the early exchanges.

From a lineout, the ball was moved into midfield where Robbie Cuthbertson hit the line at pace. Prince Henry’s killed the ball and St Peter’s took the three points.

St Peter’s again secured good lineout possession and drove the Prince Henry’s forwards back over the line and Joe Ibbotson came up with the score.

Defences dominated for the remainder of the half and a penalty for Prince Henry’s moved the interval score to 8-3.

After half-time, St Peter’s started to move the ball well, but the Prince Henry’s defence stood firm.

Some good kicking from Luke Bowler created pressure on the Prince Henry’s defence and an excellent driving lineout saw the St Peter’s forwards cross the line for another try.

Prince Henry’s could then only claim a penalty from a sustained spell of possession.

Progress in the Daily Mail Cup was complemented by North of England selection for U18s duo Bowler and Chris McTurk.

Meanwhile, the U15s will travel to Barnard Castle School in round seven on Wednesday, having seen off the challenge of hosts Crossley Heath in the last round.

St Peter’s won their fair share of possession and territory in the opening exchanges, but they were kept out by good defence and a lack of clinical finishing.

However, eventually the visitors broke through for the opening try, which was converted from the touchline.

The second half started with Heath in the ascendancy, but St Peter’s found their rhythm and added a second try.

Crossley Heath hit back with a converted try, but St Peter’s added a penalty and a converted try.

The scoring was rounded off by a flowing St Peter’s move.
