AT FIRST sight, it looks like a giant has left his pneumatic drill in this Tesco car park – but the strange structure is in fact a wind turbine.

The two six kilowatts turbines attached to a single pole were installed at the Askham Bar Tesco store in York last week and feed into the collective electricity supply for the supermarket. Under the right conditions, the turbines can provide enough electricity to power eight households – saving 27 tonnes of CO2 every year.

A Tesco spokesman said: “The investment in wind turbines forms part of our community plan to cut energy use and comes from our £100 million sustainable technology fund to find more practical ways to use renewable energy.”
