A FURIOUS crime victim has offered a £100 reward to anyone who helps catch vandals who smashed his car windscreen.

Police are appealing for information about the car crime spree, which saw at least seven windscreens smashed in the Huntington Road area of York in the early hours of Sunday.

One of the victims was business owner Will Hopwood, who will now have to fork out £924 to repair the damage to his precious Porsche Boxster.

Will, who runs motor dealership York Car Connections, is now offering a £100 reward to anyone who can provide police with information which leads to a conviction.

Will, who lives near Easingwold, was staying with friends in Huntington Road, near the iron bridge, on Sunday night, and his car was parked outside their house when it was damaged.

He said: “When I got up at about 8am there were about ten cars with their windscreens smashed.

“I saw some people looking at my car and then saw the damage.

“The worst part about it is that my insurance won’t cover the damage because I’m a motor dealer – plus my insurance would probably double next year.

“I’m happy to offer a reward to help the police catch whoever did this.”

He said: “Upon investigation I discovered some blood on the car and the windscreen and also on other vehicles.

The police were excellent in response and involved their Crime Scene Investigation unit to take DNA samples.”

He said his car had not been damaged when he returned home at about 4am, but a neighbour saw the damage at 5am so it must have been done sometime within that hour.

A York Police spokeswoman said officers were continuing to investigate.

She said: “A number of car windscreens were smashed in the Huntington Road area, near to the junction with Haleys Terrace, in the early hours of Sunday morning, between about 4am and 5am. So far seven have been reported to the police.”

Police have a possible suspect, but are appealing for people with any further details or who have had their car damaged and not reported it, to phone them on 0845 60 60 247.
