Just to see that there can be good quality and beautiful modern architecture built in York I went to the York Design Awards.

This is my favourite: The National Science Learning Centre, on the campus of the University of York.

The judges said, "A high quality modern building with flexible internal spaces where teachers come to be refreshed and to expand their own vision of their subjects. The central forum space is ideal for social events and for the interaction which is central to the success of the Centre."

I would add that it makes use of ground-source heat pumps to warm the building and has an excellent green roof. It's an attractive building as well as an environmentally-friendly one. The Council could've learned something here...
