A person was assaulted at a major sporting venue in York, police said.

North Yorkshire Police said the incident took place in the toilets at York Community Stadium in Kathryn Avenue on July 20.

A spokesperson for the force said: “One suspect, a teenage boy, was arrested on suspicion of assault in connection with the incident.

“A further suspect has also been interviewed, and both have been released on bail.”

North Yorkshire Police said it was aware of video footage circulating online relating to the assault and asked people not to share the footage further, and avoid speculating about the incident, while the force’s inquiries continue.

The spokesperson said anyone with information that could assist the investigation, who hasn't already spoken to the police, is asked to email football@northyorkshire.police.uk, quoting reference 12240129499.

York City Football Club issued its own statement on Friday, August 9, saying it and the York Stadium Management Company were also aware of the video footage circulating of the incident, which it said happened on the day of the game against Grimsby Town.

The football club added that it would take action once the police investigation concluded.
