EXPLORE, York’s independently-run library and archives service, is celebrating ten years of independence by inviting local people to join in some old-fashioned fun.
The ‘Fun Day’ at York Explore central library on August 17 will also be a chance to raise money to support holiday activities for children and teenagers.
The event will include live performances on Library Lawn, an ‘Archives map attack’ Lego event, and stained glass crafting sessions, amongst much more.
There will also be a fund-raising tombola on the day.
Explore chief executive Jenny Layfield said: “Our goal is to bring people together, and enjoy some family-friendly activities, all while raising funds to support Explore Libraries and Archives youth holiday programmes.”
Explore runs activities for children and young people during every school holiday.
Working with professional artists, writers, creatives and performers, children and teens are inspired to discover, create and imagine.
This summer, children can choose from more than 100 high-quality events, from interactive storytelling, marionette making and theatre performances to robotics and AI sessions.
But they all cost money – hence the fund-raising element of the fun day.
Lyndsay Glover, Explore’s service developer for children, young people and schools, said the hope was that Explore’s summer activities programme might light a spark in the young people taking part.
She said: “Choosing to attend one of our holiday activities, away from the pressures of the classroom, might spark a lifelong passion, inspire a child to go to university or plant the seed for a future career. The Fun Day will run from 11am to 4pm at York Explore, with activities throughout the day.
They will include:
• Tombola and Raffle: Exciting prizes to be won!
• Games: Fun for all ages.
• Stalls: Books, and delicious home-baking.
• Archives Map Attack Lego Event: A creative challenge for young minds.
• Outside the Box: Stained Glass Crafting Sessions: Inspired by York’s stained-glass heritage, led by local artist Griselda Goldsborough.
• Entertainment on Library Lawn: Enjoy a variety of performances including song, dance, pop-up theatre, storytimes, science show, and craft activities including pasta making.
