MAX CLEWORTH says it's not just goals that Paul Mullin has contributed since joining Wrexham and described his team-mate as a "leader".

The striker finished the season as leading scorer with 26 goals in all competitions, helping Phil Parkinson's men secure a top-three finish in League Two to make it back-to-back promotions for the first time in the club's history.

That earned Mullin a record-breaking third consecutive Player of the Season award as he became the first player ever to win the award three times.

But despite being a prolific scorer - Mullin reached the century goals mark for Wrexham during the run-in - Cleworth says his team-mate has so many other qualities.

"It is ridiculous getting a century of goals for Wrexham but it is more than just the goals," said Cleworth.

"Mulls is a leader for the rest of the lads. He leads from the front week in, week out, and leads the club.

"The fans, they all get behind him and they all follow him.

"He has been a real talisman for us over the last few years and someone we have looked to in difficult times.

"For him to get 100 goals in three years is an unbelievable achievement and I am made up for him."

The 29-year-old, who arrived at The Racecourse from Cambridge United in the summer of 2021, scored his 100th goal in the 2-1 win at Colchester United on April 6.

Wrexham went behind but Mullin levelled before Cleworth scored a late winner, netting his first league goal for the club.

Cleworth, who won the Young Player of the Season award for a second time, produced a series of impressive performances this season and has impressed Mullin.

"Max has been brilliant since he got into the team this year; even last year, every time he has played and been called upon he has always stood strong," said Mullin.

"As a young lad, you can see how mature he is and I was delighted for him to get the winner, especially in a big game like that.

"He has been here since a very young age and to get such an important goal was massive for him."
