Yorkshire’s friendly against Leeds/Bradford MCCU at Headingley this week proved relatively fruitless, after two of the three days saw no play due to a wet outfield.

But the one day of action that did go again saw a fine batting performance from Keighley native George Hill.

The middle-order batsman top scored for Yorkshire, making an unbeaten 82 from 83 balls in their total of 294-5, where they closed day one, and the match, as it turned out.

Only 47 overs were possible in the fixture, but the hosts made hay with the bat once play got going at 1:40pm on day one, Adam Lyth (34) and Fin Bean (62) putting on 114 for the first wicket.

That century partnership was aided by a raft of no-balls from the visiting students, but the Lyth dismissal saw them gain some vigour.

Bean, who was scoring at more than a run a ball, was caught at square leg to leave Yorkshire 131-2 in the 19th over, before James Wharton nicked off for only eight.

Hill had reached 25 as Yorkshire reached tea on 172-3, then he accelerated to bring up his 50 off only 49 balls.

He and Jonny Tattersall (35) shared 103 for the fourth wicket, before the latter was caught at cover off the spinner.

Hill was dropped soon after, but Leeds/Bradford did claim one more wicket, with Matthew Revis clean bowled for 20 off what turned out to be the final ball of the day, at 5:30pm, due to bad light.

That also turned out to be the last ball of the match, as Wednesday and yesterday turned out to be something of a damp squib.

Yorkshire now face a two-day friendly against county rivals Durham at Headingley on Sunday and Monday, though that fixture is being played behind closed doors.

That is the final friendly prior to the Vitality County Championship Division Two opener against Leicestershire at Headingley, starting a week today.
