Fifty-minute long queues on the York Outer Ring Road have eased and are expected to clear in the next hour.
The A64 westbound between Copmanthorpe and Bilbrough Top was closed earlier this afternoon following a collision between a car and a motorcycle close to the Buckles Inn turnoff.
North Yorkshire Police described the crash as "serious" and are urged motorists to avoid the area.
Firefighters from Tadcaster and Yorkshire Ambulance Service attended the scene.
At the peak of the traffic chaos National Highways warned it could delay motorists by 50 minutes and the tailback reached as far as the A19 A64 Fulford Interchange.
One lane of the westbound carriageway has now reopened.
