Tickets have gone on sale for York Proms 2024 as organisers gear up for the popular event’s return.

The event will take place in Museum Gardens on Sunday, July 28.

A live orchestra will play a selection of well-known classical music pieces along with music from film soundtracks.

And a fireworks finale will once again bring the night to a close.

The annual event was launched in 2017.

It had to be cancelled for two years because of Covid.

But the Proms returned with a vengeance in 2022 – when the audience included 500 ticket holders who had originally bought tickets for the cancelled 2020 event and had held on to them ever since.

Despite the possibility of a thunderstorm and heavy rain this year’s event was still hailed a success by organisers.

Two thousand people filled Museum Garden’s for the event in June.

The traditional fireworks finale even managed to go off.

“Even though the rain was relentless our crowd really took it in their stride, with some ingenious ways of combining waterproofs and flags, and some wonderful spirit of celebration,” says York Proms co-founder Rebecca Newman.

“Considering we’ve had one wet event in five years, we’ve done pretty well.”

Rebecca explains that pre-sale for the 2024 opened a few days ago and tickets are already “flying out of the door”.

“We always try to get tickets on sale ahead of Christmas as so many people like to buy them as Christmas gifts for the music lovers in their life, as well as get a great value ticket for themselves,” she says.

Rebecca adds how a limited number of fast-track tickets are on sale for event goers to beat the queues – and over two thirds of them have been sold.

Tickets are currently at the early bird price with adult tickets starting at £34 and flexible ticket options also available, where tickets are refundable and transferable.

Child tickets are currently £7 and under fives go free.

The event will feature local talent on the warm up stage and during the interval.

Last year included performances from NETheatre, York College Dance and local soloists. Applications for the community stage will open in 2024.

Proms organisers are looking for businesses to sponsor the 2024 event.

Rebecca says: “2023 was the first year we sought sponsorship and, given the massive increases in costs in the post Covid event industry, they were an important part of sustaining this event.

“We would love to hear from any local businesses who are keen on a partnership for 2024.”
