IT'S a far cry from the Maracanã to KitKat Crescent.

But football fans in York are to get the chance to enjoy some Brazilian flair when arguably the world's greatest ever player comes to town later this month - in an art exhibition.

A York art gallery is to host a photographic exhibition on legendary number ten Pelé, widely recognised as the best footballer of all time.

The collection consists of eight of the most iconic images from his career, including his embrace with Bobby Moore after England and Brazil's memorable clash in the 1970 World Cup.

Pelé and Washington Green Fine Art Publishing have collaborated in the project, and all eight framed images are signed by the player.

Kate Durant, of York Castle Galleries, in Castlegate, which will host the exhibition, said: "This new collection of photographic art is an incredible celebration for lovers of the beautiful game and the greatest international ambassador football has ever witnessed.

"The opportunity to own a piece of photographic art signed by the football master himself is a wonderful opportunity."

Pelé, now 67, was born Edson Arantes do Nascimento and grew up in a poor but supportive family in Bauru, São Paulo.

He was spotted at the age of 11 by Brazilian star Waldemar de Brito, who predicted he would become the greatest player in the world. Pelé joined Santos at the age of 15 and made his debut for Brazil ten months later.

In 1958, aged 17, he became the youngest ever World Cup winner, as Brazil beat hosts Sweden 5-2 in the final, and he went on to lift the trophy again 12 years later, as part of the great Brazil side of 1970.

He was also part of the triumphant 1962 squad, but was injured and missed the final.

At club and international level, Pelé smashed goal-scoring records on a regular basis, and in Rio de Janeiro in 1969, he scored his 1,000th goal.

After retiring in 1977 he went on to become a football ambassador and commentator, also taking up roles with the United Nations and lending his name to campaigns.

The exhibition opens on February 14.
